Ihavebasedmydecisiontopursueanacademiccareernotonpurelypracticalreasons,butratheronmyownnaturalinterestsandaptitude.Mypersonalphilosophyisthatmoneyandsocialstatusshouldnotbepursuedaslife-consumingobjectivesandthatinactualitytheyaretheby-productsofgoalsoriginatingfromone‘sinnerneeds。

Iunderstandthatmyintellectualcapacityisagift,andIintendtousethisgifttotheverybestofmysubstantialcapabilities.IaminterestedinthefieldofstudyofOrganizationalBehavior.Inthepast,Ihavehadtheexperienceofworkinginsettingswherethepeopleandthecorporateculturesofthecompanieswerealldifferent。

Ihavefoundthatthereisagreatdifferenceintheboththebehaviorsofpeopleandoftheirorganizations,dependingonwhethertheyarestate-ownedenterprises(SOEs),largemultinationalfirms,orsmalltomediumsizedforeignenterprises.Onesimpleexampleisthatoftheabilityofanemployeetoactindependentlywithoutdirectinstructionsfromhisorherboss。

InmanyChineseorganizations,actingwithoutdirectinstructionsisconsideredaformofdisrespecttowardsthesupervisor,whoisgenerallyoffendedbysuchbehavior.Inmyexperienceandresearch,suchorganizationstendtohavelowoperatingefficiencywiththeemployeeslosingtheirinnateabilitytotaketheinitiative。

Incontrast,foreignenterprisestendtowelcomeemployeeswhohavetheabilitytomakedecisionsontheirown,thoughtheextenttowhichthisistruedependsonwhetherthesupervisorisalocalChineseoranexpatriate.Theseorganizationshavecomparativelyhigheroperatingefficiencyandemployeesenjoygreaterjobsatisfaction。

MyresearchandobservationshaveshownmethatonlyasmallfractionofChineseemployeesarewelladaptedtotheworkingmethodsoftheforeignenterprises.Manyareaccustomedtomerelyhavingothersmakethedecisionsforthemandarenotexperiencedattakingonsomereasonableresponsibilities。

Whataccountsforthedifferentbehaviorsofthesepeopleandtheirorganizations?Myobservationsandpersonalexperiencehavegreatlyarousedmyinterestinstudyingthissubject.Iaminterestedindeterminingthespecificfactorsthatdeterminethedifferentbehaviorsofemployeesandhowtheyworktogethertoformthebehavioroftheorganization。

aswellasfindingwaystomodifysuchbehaviorstomakeforamorehealthyandproperlyfunctioningorganization.InallofthevariousfieldsthatIhaveworkedin,suchasinternationaltrade,marketingandofficeadministration,Ihavefoundthatthemostimportantfactorinsuccessfulbusinessesliesinhowthebusinessisabletoexploititsresourcestomeettheneedsofitstargetmarkets。

Humanresourcesultimatelymakepossiblethefullutilizationoftheotherresources,evenincludingthatofthemostadvancedandpowerfulnewtechnologies.Theessenceofsuccessatleveragingresourcesismanagingpeopleandtheirbehavior.Withtheintroductionanddevelopmentoftheideaofemployeeempowerment。
